I'm so excited to have the opportunity to participate in the Bead Peeps Swap and Hop this year!!! It's the first one and I can't even tell you how pumped I am! So here are my answers to the questions that were posed on the facebook page.
1. Why or how did you get started making jewelry?
When I was probably about ten years old, we went to visit family in New York. Growing up, my grandparent's house wasn't really a kid friendly place. There was a lot of breakable stuff and stuff we shouldn't touch, and the main sitting room had hard couches. There was a room with a tv, but my grandfather was always watching some war show, so we were always looking for something to do there. One day, my grandmother took my sister and I to a bead shop, and we each made our own pair of earrings. I was hooked! When I went home, I had my parents take me to walmart (I know) and I bought a ton of jewelry making supplies.
Here are a couple examples of the early jewelry:
I'd definitely say I've evolved since then. I mean. It has been 10 years after all. I'd say I've developed a bohemian style. Hopefully my work gives off a voice. I've read other posts about having a 'specific' voice. I feel like I like to experiment too much to stick to one thing. I'm always reaching for the next new material I can get my hands on, and always looking for new techniques to explore. To see examples of more recent work, look at my gallery.
2. What style(s) of jewelry do you like to make?
My style I would say is very bohemian. I kind of like to describe it as spirited. It probably sounds super crazy, but I feel like I can feel a spirit running through a lot of my pieces.
3. What materials do you prefer to use (and which ones do you avoid)?
I love to use swarovski crystals, leather, sari silk, fabrics, copper wire, semi-precious gemstone beads, bone beads, shell, etc... I honestly really love new materals, and I love to try and incorporate found materials like bottlecaps or keys or metal bits and bobs that I find around. I try to stay far away from plastic beads (like far far away). I rarely, if ever, use seed beads. And I honestly don't really use glass beads much unless they're really special (i.e. lampwork).
I love metal components, and hope to start collecting more of them. This challenge has opened up my mind to all of the amazing metal art components made by my fellow jewelry makers! I'd love to get into ceramic and porcelain beads too!
4. What techniques do you prefer (and are there any you don't like)?
I do a lot of wire work. I do not really do any soldering or heat work, though I wish I had the tools to! I incorporate sewing into my work too. I'm always trying to find new ways to do things. Lately I've been trying to challenge myself with my pieces rather than just slapping a piece together.
5. What colors do you use most, and which do you run screaming from?
I don't know if there's any particular color that I use 'most.' I would say that I tend to stray away from a lot of bright colors, like bright orange or bright red... Basically anything that looks plasticy. I'm open to challenges though.
To get more of a feel for my work and to see more of it, look though my gallery! I'm so excited for this hop! I cannot wait!
